Meet our new Sustainability Manager

To celebrate World Environment Day, we met Emma Roy, who joined us in May as our new Sustainability and Climate Change Manager. We caught up with Emma to find out more about her and what she hopes to bring to Registers of Scotland.

Tell us a bit about your background.

I’ve always been interested in the environment and I’ve been very lucky to spend the last 6 years in this field after completing a degree in Environmental Geography. My career began working in a social enterprise as an Environmental Advisor where I helped lots of companies throughout Scotland to improve their environmental performance.

I’ve recently joined RoS from Lothian Buses where I was Environmental Officer. This role was very challenging and involved managing and reducing the environmental impact of the business across all operations.

What attracted you to Registers of Scotland?

RoS is a forward thinking and trusted business which is leading the way with its business transformation and I’m delighted to be joining to shape the future of the company’s sustainability and climate change actions. This role is a great opportunity to work closely with colleagues to encourage behaviour change and reduce our impact on the environment.

What’s the purpose of your role?

My role is to ensure RoS successfully progresses towards meeting immediate and future climate change targets set by the Scottish Government. To do this I will champion all environmental, sustainable development and climate change matters throughout the business.

What are your immediate priorities as Sustainability & Climate Change Manager?

I’m aiming to re-establish the Environmental Working Group (EWG) which has a key role in developing and embedding greater awareness of environmental initiatives through key projects. I’ll also be working closely with departments across the business to review and if necessary, update current procedures and practices such as recycling and energy efficiency.

What keeps you busy outside of work?

You’ll probably find me exploring a new location in Scotland. A recent highlight was visiting areas along the North Coast 500 route in the highlands, including deserted beaches and Durness!

  1. Hi Emma,

Hope you are enjoying your new role. One simple sustainability ‘win’ would be to encourage RoS to use real cutlery and glasses in the canteen instead of single use plastics. Even if these are recycled it’s still incredibly wasteful compared to washing real glasses and cutlery.
